Composite doors are versatile and durable, renowned for their unparalleled combination of performance and aesthetic.

While composite doors boast the visuals of classic timber doors, they combine this with all the durability, weather resistance and low maintenance requirements of modern materials.

However, as with any item that’s exposed to the elements day in day out, composite doors can start to develop issues over time. But, in many cases, these problems can be resolved with just strategic maintenance or minor adjustments.

At Wolf Doors, we supply and install composite doors in properties throughout Skipton, Harrogate and beyond.

So, in this article, our expert team have shared their handy guide to understanding the most common issues that composite doors face, and how to fix them.

Sticking locks

Stiff or sticking locks are one of the most frequently occurring issues with composite doors.

Typically, this is caused by:

A build up of dirt or dust

Insufficient lubrication in the locking mechanism

A misalignment with the door, due to shifting over time (causing a pressure build-up in the lock)

So, in many cases, the issue can be fixed by applying a silicone-based lubricant to the door’s lock, hinges and moving parts.

If adding lubrication doesn’t fix the problem, then enlist a professional to adjust the hinges and see if this resolves the issue.

Draughts around the door

These doors are specifically designed to ensure the highest standards of insulation. So, if you notice draughts around the door, then this is a clear indicator of a problem.

Typically, this means that there is an issue with the frame’s sealing.

The most common causes of this issue are:

Worn weather seals

Compressed seals (causing a loss of flexibility)

Door misalignment

In some cases, if the seals are replaced, then this will fix the issue. If this doesn’t work, then the door should be adjusted, to ensure there is a full seal when the door closes.

Clogged drainage holes

Composite door frames are designed to feature drainage holes, which seamlessly direct rainwater away from the unit.

Over time, these small drainage holes can get blocked, e.g. with dirt, dust and debris.

If this occurs, you may start to see water pooling around the bottom of the door.

To fix this issue, all you need to do is clean the drainage holes (you can do this with a soft, small brush) to remove the blockage.

Door catching the frame

Sometimes over time, a composite door can start to scrape, stick or catch against the frame during opening and closing.

Most commonly, this is due to the door’s alignment having shifted.

This isn’t an uncommon occurrence with doors like these, and it can happen as a result of temperature changes (causing expansion and contraction), or general resettlement of the property.

Thankfully, this is a straightforward fix. In some cases (usually with modern hinges) these can be achieved with DIY adjustments. But, if more significant corrections are needed, then you can enlist a professional to complete these for you quickly and easily.

Worn seals

Common signs that your seals have worn or failed include:

Increased draughts

Whistling noises (especially during high winds)

Water ingress

Reduced insulation

If required, your seals can be replaced with very little associated costs.

Condensation around the glass

If condensation occurs occasionally on the outside of the glazing (especially during colder weather), this is a result of the glazing performing as expected.

However, if condensation appears in between the glass panes, then this could be an indicator of a failed glazing unit. In this instance, the glazing unit itself may need replacing. But, it’s very rare for glazing units to fail, especially in modern composite doors.

Enlisting a professional

At Wolf Doors, we are on hand to support properties across Skipton, Harrogate and the rest of the UK. Our professional team are fully accredited and have many years of industry experience under their belt.

In addition to composite door supply and installation, we also offer comprehensive aftercare services, including long-term maintenance and one-off repairs.

In recent years, sectional garage doors have risen in popularity significantly, and it’s easy to see why.

For modern properties, these garage doors represent a fantastic sleek, easy to use and space-saving solution. At the same time, they boast top security standards, and are available in a huge variety of colours, styles and finishes.

So, if you’re considering upgrading your existing garage door, keep reading.

Below, Wolf Doors’ expert team have shared their 5 top reasons why you should invest in a sectional garage door.

What are sectional garage doors?

A sectional garage door consists of multiple horizontal panels (aka sections). These panels are hinged together.

That way, when the door is opened, the panels are designed to slide vertically and travel along tracks up and flat alongside the garage’s ceiling.

The key USP of sectional garage doors is the fact that they can open straight upwards and tuck neatly into the ceiling (rather than swinging outwards).

Compared to up-and-over doors, sectional garage doors:

Don’t require a lot of space to open (meaning the area in front of the garage can be repurposed for another use)

Also allow you to maximise the internal garage space you have available (as you don’t need to leave any space for opening or closing the door).

Have a tighter seal around the opening

This means they achieve improved insulation and security

With that in mind, let’s run through our 5 favourite reasons why you should explore sectional garage doors.

5 reasons to buy a sectional garage door

Lots of styles

Sectional garage doors offer complete design flexibility. They are an extremely versatile alternative to conventional, traditional door styles.

Their extensive range of design styles includes everything from modern flush panels, to more traditional ribbed or cassette finishes.

So, you can choose a finish that perfectly complements your property, whether it’s a new build, a period property, the height of modernity, or has its own distinctive unique-to-you aesthetic.

Various colour options

Sectional doors are also available in an extensive range of colours and finishes.

This includes everything from your classic shades of whites and greys, to natural woodgrain effects.

What’s more, by working with a specialist supplier like Wolf Doors, you can also choose a sectional door in a bespoke colour shade. This includes the flexibility to colour match your garage door with other property features, such as your windows, front doors or exterior cladding.

Bonus: As a Hörmann partner, Wolf Doors have the full range of Hörmann styles, finishes, and customisation options available. So, you can enjoy even more design choice for your new sectional garage door.

Easy to use

Sectional garage doors are brilliantly easy to use. Not only are they designed for smooth and even operation, but they can also be opened and closed with minimal physical effort.

They can also be equipped with electric operators, to allow you to operate them via a remote control.

Plus, as the doors don’t swing outwards or inwards to open, they can be used without requiring you to make available space inside or outside of the garage.

All in all, this makes sectional garage doors a great way to maximise the usability of this part of your home. This is particularly valuable if you’re thinking of converting your garage to another room, e.g. a home office.

Insulated options available

Modern sectional doors come with insulated panels. This improves their insulation, and helps you to regulate the garage’s indoor temperature.

This feature significantly improves energy efficiency and helps to keep energy bills down, while also reducing draughts and improving comfort in the garage. Ideal if you’re using the garage as a home office, gym, spare bedroom or studio, for example.

Security

Sectional garage doors offer one of the highest security standards of any modern garage door.

These sophisticated units feature tight opening seals and close-fitting slats, plus multi-point locking mechanisms. As a result, they are extremely resistant to forced entry.

Explore our sectional garage doors

Thanks to their intuitive design, high performance, ease of use and extensive customisability, sectional garage doors are a fantastic investment for any property.

At Wolf Doors, we supply and install an extensive range of sectional garage doors, including colours, designs and finishes to suit all property types and individual requirements.

We are the chosen supplier of countless property owners across Skipton, Harrogate and beyond.

While wood and composite may be among the most common materials for front doors, you might be ready to upgrade to something that’s a little more stylish.

In recent years, steel front doors have emerged as a bold, modern and high performance alternative to conventional front doors.

These doors are also fantastically strong and durable, making them a brilliant long term investment.

If you’re weighing up your options – and trying to decide which material would offer the best fit for your property – keep reading.

Below, the Wolf Doors team have shared a quick guide, covering all the points you need to consider when debating a steel front door.

Options for Front Door Materials

Your front door is a core component of your home’s security, energy efficiency and curb appeal.

There are a number of different front door materials that you can choose from, and each one brings its own specific strengths and weaknesses.

Let’s go through each in a bit more detail:

Traditional wooden doors – While these are widely appreciated for their natural warmth and character, wooden doors have significantly higher maintenance requirements. They are also much more prone to warping, cracking and fading.

uPVC doors – uPVC doors are one of the most affordable material types. However, their appearance is not as popular as other material types, and they can be prone to discolouration over time.

Composite doors – These doors combine the best advantages of multiple material types. These doors consist of a strong core and durable outer layers (e.g. glass-reinforced plastic and insulating foam). This means they have a fantastic level of durability and weather resistance, are resistant to warping and cracking, and have minimal maintenance requirements, all while replicating the appearance of timber.

Steel doors – Doors made from steel boast an exceptional level of strength and durability. For homeowners that appreciate a modern aesthetic, they also achieve an attractive bold, modern finish.

What are the advantages of steel front doors?

Exceptional security – The robustness and strength of steel means that these doors achieve a fantastic level of security and resistance to forced entry.

Compatibility with advanced multi-point locking systems and reinforced frames – To further enhance the door’s security standards.

High durability – Unlike wooden doors, steel doors are completely resistant to rotting, cracking, warping and pests.

Fantastic weather resistance and fire resistance

The highest energy efficiency standards

Minimal maintenance requirements – With no need for regular sealing, staining or sanding (unlike wooden doors).

Long predicted lifespan – Retaining its same sleek aesthetic for many decades to come.

Available in a wide range of styles, especially when you work with a trusted supplier like Wolf Doors.

Steel VS Composite Front Doors

As two of the most popular materials for modern, high performance front doors, it’s worth comparing these two popular materials.

In most cases, steel doors are stronger and more durable. The doors can also be tailored to further strengthen their security and performance standards. If security, durability and longevity are your top priorities, then these doors are sure to tick all the boxes.

That’s not to say that composite doors lack in these departments, though. In fact, composite doors offer excellent performance standards, including strong security standards and reliably high thermal insulation and weather resistance. If you prefer the traditional aesthetic of a wooden door, then composite doors are a brilliant investment, which combines leading performance standards with this classic aesthetic.

To summarise, steel front doors have the edge in terms of security, durability and longevity. But, composite doors combine high performance standards with a more traditional front door style.

As we start to see the approach of winter, you need to prepare your home for colder temperatures and more extreme weather conditions.

A critical area of your property that you’ll need to consider – but one that often gets neglected! – is your garage.

Throughout the year, but particularly during the winter, the garage can soon become one of the coldest and dampest parts of a home. So, without proper protection in place, cold air, rainwater and moisture can quickly start to damage your belongings, compromise the structure, and cause your heating bills to spike.

In this article, our expert team have shared their top tips for winter-proofing your garage, ensuring it stays dry, insulated and energy-efficient throughout the winter.

Why it’s important to winter-proof your garage

Whether you use your garage for parking, storage or as a home office, winter-proofing the space is essential.

This is because common issues – including gaps around the doors, poor insulation and unsealed walls or floors – if left unchecked, can allow cold air and moisture to enter the structure.

So, without sufficient winter-proofing in place, numerous issues can develop, including:

Damp and condensation – Moisture build-up can lead to damp patches and mould growth on walls and ceilings.

Damaging stored items – This cold and damp environment can also cause damage to other items in the room, e.g. causing metal tools or vehicles to corrode or rust, or compromising cardboard boxes and other vulnerable materials.

Rain and draughts entering the space – Poor or faulty seals and gaps around the door can allow rainwater and cold air to enter the space.

Difficulty heating – With the garage being vulnerable to the cold and rain, it becomes much more difficult (and expensive) to maintain a consistent indoor temperature. If the garage is attached to your home, then this impact is increased even further.

Vehicle damage – As we mentioned above, items that are stored in your garage can also be damaged by the cold and wet conditions. Cars are much more prone to rust and electrical issues if they are stored in damp, cold garages.

How to winter-proof your garage

By winter-proofing your garage, you can maintain stable indoor temperatures and prevent damp from entering the property, thereby minimising the risk of these issues occurring.

There are several effective strategies that you can follow to equip your garage for the winter months. Let’s go through these in more detail.

Insulate the garage door – By adding insulation to your garage door (or investing in a new garage door that comes with insulation) you can dramatically improve your garage’s weather resistance. This is the most effective way to protect your garage against cold spells, and help you maintain a stable indoor temperature throughout the year.

Add wall and ceiling insulation – Similarly, you can also add insulation (e.g. insulation boards or mineral wool panels) to walls and ceilings that are made of either bare brick or concrete.

Check for gaps around doors and windows – Inspect all edges, frames and joints around your garage doors and windows, checking for any visible gaps or cracks. If you do spot these issues, use weatherstripping or rubber seals to re-secure the area against draughts and moisture.

Improve ventilation and airflow – Allowing airflow throughout your garage will help to prevent moisture build-up. You can do this by either installing trickle vents, or adding an extractor fan to the room.

Apply a waterproof floor sealant – If your garage has concrete floors, this sealant will help minimise the amount of ground moisture that is allowed to rise through the surface. Similarly, you could also apply a masonry waterproofer to your garage’s external walls.

If you’re looking to upgrade your garage, Wolf Doors team are on hand to help.

We can provide you with a state of the art insulated garage door, which dramatically improves the usability of the space. Not only will a new door keep your garage warmer, but it will also reduce the risk of damp, and therefore protect your structure and your possessions throughout the winter.

In this guide, Wolf Doors’ team of window experts have shared their guide to uPVC VS Timber windows. Keep reading to find out more about their respective benefits and recommended use cases.

What to consider when choosing a window

When it comes to choosing a window, there are a number of factors that need to be considered.

You’ll need to weigh up:

Your budget (for the upfront cost)

Energy efficiency (and the long-term cost savings that come with more energy efficient windows)

Maintenance and upkeep requirements

Style, design and colours available

Aesthetics (and how they match the aesthetics of the rest of your property)

Durability and weather-resistance

Security

Planning restrictions (if applicable)

The advantages of uPVC windows

uPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) windows offer a fantastic high performance yet affordable solution, with styles and colours to suit every property type.

The benefits that uPVC windows offer include:

Durability – At the same time, even at this lower price point, uPVC windows are renowned for their durability, impressive weather resistance, and long predicted lifespans.

Energy efficiency – With the addition of double glazing, uPVC windows offer fantastic energy efficiency, which can minimise heat loss, and keep your heating bills low throughout the year.

Affordability – uPVC windows are a brilliant cost-effective option. In fact, uPVC windows are, typically, around 25% cheaper than equivalent aluminium windows, and 50% cheaper than timber alternatives.

Low maintenance – As uPVC is a durable variety of plastic, it boasts extremely low maintenance requirements. In fact, unlike timber windows, you don’t have to ever worry about re-painting, sealing or sanding the window.

Resistance to common causes of damage – The use of plastic in these units also makes them resistant to many common causes of damage or deterioration. They are resistant to corrosion, fading, warping and rot. As a result, they ensure a fantastic, dependable investment.

High security standards – When you work with a specialist supplier like Wolf Doors, you can equip your uPVC windows with sophisticated security features, including multi-point locking systems (for example).

The advantages of timber windows

Timber windows are a popular choice amongst property owners, particularly in period or heritage properties. This is thanks to their classic style and characterful aesthetics.

The benefits of choosing timber windows include:

Aesthetics – Their classic design and use of traditional materials makes timber windows a great match for period properties.

High insulation – Timber naturally boasts high levels of insulation.

However, it’s important to note that these benefits need to be weighed up against a number of other drawbacks.

Timber windows come with a more expensive upfront cost. Plus, they require much more regular maintenance (including re-painting, sealing or sanding), and are significantly more at risk of deterioration and weather-related damage, such as UV damage, corrosion, fading, warping and rot.

Wolf Doors’ range of uPVC windows

By creating a seamless connection between the inside of your property and your outdoor spaces, you can bring all the beauty of the outdoors in.

Creating these harmonious spaces is one of the most popular interior design trends of recent years, and it’s easy to see why.

Not only can you make your home more spacious, and make your garden more usable, but you can also uplift the aesthetic of your property interior, too.

First step in achieving this interior design goal? Patio doors.

In this article, our expert team have shared their top tips for using patio doors to transform your property, and achieve a seamless transition between the indoors and the outdoors.

Why is creating seamless indoor-outdoor so popular?

Increasing light levels – With the addition of large patio doors, you can dramatically increase the light levels in your property, all year round.

Increasing your available space – By making your outdoor spaces easier to access, you can make a large area of your property much more usable. You can achieve this even further, by adding more outdoor furniture or strategic layouts (e.g. a breakfast nook, which catches the sun in the morning).

Creating an open-plan aesthetic – With the expansive glass of patio doors, you can achieve uninterrupted views of your garden. This is a wonderful, natural way to enhance the interior design of your home.

Keeping your home cool during the summer – During sunny spells, you can fully open your patio doors, bringing fresh air and a breeze inside.

Making entertaining easier – With more available space and the opportunity to easily transition outside or inside, patio doors are a great addition if you regularly entertain (especially large groups!). Plus, it also makes hosting outdoor events, barbeques and garden parties far easier to pull off.

What are the best types of patio doors to achieve this?

At Wolf Doors, we offer a wide range of elegant, premium quality patio doors, with options to suit every home and interior design style.

If you’re looking to create a seamless indoor-outdoor aesthetic for your property, the types of patio doors that we would recommend you explore are:

Bifold doors

Bifold doors consist of multiple panels, which fold to the side of the unit. They are available in a variety of finishes, including aluminium, uPVC and timber.

As a result, they can open up an entire wall of the property, achieving a sleek, super modern aesthetic.

Sliding patio doors

Sliding doors feature wide glass panels, combined with slim flames, to bring in the maximum amount of light.

If you’re ready to replace your existing garage door, or want to invest in upgrading your garage with a state-of-the-art door, here at Wolf Doors we have a wide range of options available.

With so many garage door types, features and add-ons available, it can be difficult to get an accurate cost prediction for your new garage door – by just looking online.

To help you get a better sense of your options (and estimate your budget more accurately) we’ve shared our comprehensive garage door cost guide below.

If you are interested in a new garage door, contact our team today for a quote. We cover customers across Skipton, Harrogate and the surrounding areas.

What effects the price of a Garage Door?

The price of a garage door varies based on a number of different factors. These include:

The type of your garage door

The size

The mechanism being used for your garage door

Whether or not you are opting for an electric opening

Whether or not you are insulating your garage door

Removing your old garage door

Installation

Here at Wolf Doors, all our garage door quotes include installation and VAT.

(Note, although not all garage doors can be insulated, all garage doors can feature electric opening mechanisms).

How much does your typical Garage Door cost?

According to the Checkatrade website, the average costs for replacing garage doors in the UK are as follows.

It’s important to note that these figures are just average estimates. Furthermore, this won’t be the total cost of your new garage door. You’ll need to consider a number of other factors, which we’ve outlined in more detail below.

In many cases, a company will display a price for the garage door, but this price will only represent the cost of the door itself. You will need to double check whether or not it includes installation and VAT.

At Wolf Doors, the prices that we list for our garage doors include installation and VAT. It’s all part of our commitment to providing a trusted, reliable service.

Electric Garage Doors

All garage doors can be made to feature an electric opening mechanism.

Electric openings are an optional extra for garage doors, and an alternative to manually opened garage doors. These allow you to open the door electronically, typically using a remote control.

While it represents an extra cost, this feature is a great way to improve the usability of your new door.

The cost of electric opening options will vary based on:

Your chosen operating device / system

The cost of installation (for the supplier you’ve chosen)

Any other electronic accessories that you’d like to add

Removal of the old garage door

Another point to remember is the cost of removing the old garage door.

The cost of removal will vary, based on the installation costs quoted by the supplier you have chosen, and the type of garage door that needs to be removed.

It will also depend on whether you would like your supplier to dispose of the garage door for you, too.

Installation

Equally, the cost of installation isn’t always included in the price that companies show for their garage doors.

According to Checkatrade, typical installation costs for professional garage door specialists installing a new garage door are between £350 – £650.

Here at Wolf Doors, all our garage door quotes include installation and VAT.

To get a more accurate estimate of this price, you’ll need to speak to your garage door supplier, and get a quote from them.

Delivery

Delivery costs are another commonly forgotten cost, as they aren’t usually included in the product price of a new garage door.

As with installation and removal, delivery costs will vary based on the garage door supplier that you choose.

VAT

In some cases, garage door companies may show a price for the garage door itself, but not include VAT in the price advertised.

Standard VAT is 20%. So if a garage door price does not include VAT, it can represent a significant unexpected final price.

With Wolf Doors, you can feel at ease, knowing our prices always include VAT.

Wolf Doors is a reputable, accredited garage door supplier, trusted by countless customers across Skipton, Harrogate and the surrounding areas.

When you enlist our team, you can be certain that you will receive a reliable service, at a competitive price.

To find out more about our range of garage doors, or to get more details about the cost of our supply and installation services, contact our team today.

Although it might seem like a straightforward decision, windows are available in a wide range of different styles and layouts, with each option providing its own unique benefits.

In this article, we’ll be outlining the differences between two of the most popular domestic window types: flush and non-flush casement windows.

Below, we’ve detailed the key differences between these two styles, explored their pros and cons, and shared our guidance for helping you find the best match for your property.

What are flush casement windows?

Flush casement windows are designed so that, when it is closed, the window sash will sit flush within the window frame.

That way, when you’re viewing the window from the outside, you can’t see an overlap. This achieves their characteristic flat, seamless finish.

What are non-flush casement windows?

Non-flush casement windows differ, as their sash is slightly raised (i.e. it doesn’t sit flush).

This means that, from the outside, you can see that the sash slightly overlaps the window frame.

Although this means that they don’t have the same minimalist aesthetic of flush casement windows, some property owners prefer the extra dimension and character that this lipped finish achieves.

Pros and cons

Both window varieties offer a stylish, secure and easy to use addition to a property. But, depending on your requirements and the specific layout of your house, one may offer a better match than the other.

The main pros and cons of each window type are as follows:

Flush casement windows

Pros:

A sleek, modern aesthetic

A great match for minimalist properties (or can be used to bring a modern touch to period properties)

Great ventilation

High security

Strong sealing (ensuring a high level of weather resistance)

Great energy efficiency (particularly when high quality glazing and sealants are used)

Easy to clean and maintain

Cons:

Extra consideration may be required, to ensure that drainage is allowed to flow properly

Slightly more extensive than non-flush casement windows, as their design makes them more complex to install

Non-flush casement windows

Pros:

A stylish, characteristic yet timeless aesthetic

Widely used in both contemporary and period properties

High weather resistance

Naturally effective drainage (thanks to the lipped design)

Great ventilation

High security

Great energy efficiency (particularly when high quality glazing and sealants are used)

Typically more affordable than flush casement windows

Cons:

Some property owners may find the design to be too traditional, if they have a very modern property

The lipped design may require more regular cleaning and maintenance, as debris can build up there over time

Conclusion

In summary, the main points to consider when assessing your options are budget and aesthetics.

If you want to prioritise a clean, modern aesthetic, then flush casement windows will provide the best match.

Alternatively, if you’d prefer to keep the costs down, or you don’t tend to lean towards minimalist designs, then non-flush casement windows would be a great investment.

At Wolf Doors, we supply a huge variety of premium quality windows, including casement windows, flush casement windows and non-flush casement windows in a wide range of colours and designs.

Colour Matching your Windows

Colour matching your window frames with your front door and/or garage is a great, simple and striking way to enhance your property’s curb appeal.

At Wolf Doors, we offer a wide variety of window styles, including:

Colour Matching your Front Door

If your front door is reaching the end of its lifespan, or you’re starting to see flaws in its performance, then this might be the perfect time to invest in a replacement.

Signs that your front door is ready for a replacement can include visible damage, stiffness or difficulty to use, poor insulation, rot, water damage, security risks, and high maintenance requirements.

If you spot any of these signs, replacing your front door with a colour matched new model is a fantastic way to enhance your property’s exterior, and even increase its value.

At Wolf Doors, we supply both front doors and composite doors. With a wide range of colours available, we make it easy to achieve a cohesive look for your property.

You can even use our handy front door designer tool, to design a brand new door that perfectly reflects your signature style.
