So, without proper protection in place, cold air, rainwater and moisture can quickly start to damage your belongings, compromise the structure, and cause your heating bills to spike.

Why it’s important to winter-proof your garage
Whether you use your garage for parking, storage or as a home office, winter-proofing the space is essential.
This is because common issues – including gaps around the doors, poor insulation and unsealed walls or floors – if left unchecked, can allow cold air and moisture to enter the structure.
So, without sufficient winter-proofing in place, numerous issues can develop, including:
- Damp and condensation – Moisture build-up can lead to damp patches and mould growth on walls and ceilings.
- Damaging stored items – This cold and damp environment can also cause damage to other items in the room, e.g. causing metal tools or vehicles to corrode or rust, or compromising cardboard boxes and other vulnerable materials.
- Rain and draughts entering the space – Poor or faulty seals and gaps around the door can allow rainwater and cold air to enter the space.
- Difficulty heating – With the garage being vulnerable to the cold and rain, it becomes much more difficult (and expensive) to maintain a consistent indoor temperature. If the garage is attached to your home, then this impact is increased even further.
- Vehicle damage – As we mentioned above, items that are stored in your garage can also be damaged by the cold and wet conditions. Cars are much more prone to rust and electrical issues if they are stored in damp, cold garages.
How to winter-proof your garage
By winter-proofing your garage, you can maintain stable indoor temperatures and prevent damp from entering the property, thereby minimising the risk of these issues occurring.
There are several effective strategies that you can follow to equip your garage for the winter months. Let’s go through these in more detail.
- Insulate the garage door – By adding insulation to your garage door (or investing in a new garage door that comes with insulation) you can dramatically improve your garage’s weather resistance. This is the most effective way to protect your garage against cold spells, and help you maintain a stable indoor temperature throughout the year.
- Add wall and ceiling insulation – Similarly, you can also add insulation (e.g. insulation boards or mineral wool panels) to walls and ceilings that are made of either bare brick or concrete.
- Check for gaps around doors and windows – Inspect all edges, frames and joints around your garage doors and windows, checking for any visible gaps or cracks. If you do spot these issues, use weatherstripping or rubber seals to re-secure the area against draughts and moisture.
- Improve ventilation and airflow – Allowing airflow throughout your garage will help to prevent moisture build-up. You can do this by either installing trickle vents, or adding an extractor fan to the room.
- Apply a waterproof floor sealant – If your garage has concrete floors, this sealant will help minimise the amount of ground moisture that is allowed to rise through the surface. Similarly, you could also apply a masonry waterproofer to your garage’s external walls.
