In fact, we find that many people choose to build a wooden garage by themselves. This is a challenging (but highly rewarding!) DIY project. Before you get started, it is essential that you consider the size and scope of the project.
We are often asked whether homeowners will need planning permission to build a wooden garage on their property.
Well, to answer this question, whether or not you will require planning permission depends on the size of your construction and whether it is attached to your house.
If your wooden garage and wooden garage doors is being built as an outbuilding, then you will not need planning permission if:
- It is not build directly in front of your home
- It is not build within a metre of your home
- The garage floor is smaller than 15 metres square
- The eaves’ height is less than 2.5 metres
- The height of the entire structure is less than 4 metres
If your structure adheres to all of these regulations, then it does not require property permission.
These regulations are slightly different if your wooden garage will be attached to your home. This is because it will be classified as an extension, rather than an outbuilding. In this case, in order to avoid needing planning permission, you will need to:
- Be less than 4 metres tall
- Be shorted than your home’s roof
- Not include a veranda or balcony
- Use consistent materials, which tie in to your existing building
- It should not extend over 3 metres beyond your home’s rear wall (if it is one storey high)
As you can see, planning permission and building regulations are not as scary as they sound!
